Readings

The Octagon Tower of Ely Cathedral set against a blue sky with a single white wispy cloud. The white text 'Ely Writers' in the Give You Glory font is to the right of the tower.

We love to hear what our members have written during our meetings, and it can be beneficial for the writer. We like to hear as many readings as possible in our meetings.

Reading out a piece of writing can be nerve-racking, especially if it’s first draft. We aim to provide a safe space for you to read out what you’ve written. We want you to feel encouraged, emboldened and inspired.

We have a few rules about readings:

  1. Optional
As much as we love to hear your readings, you don’t ever have to read anything out.
We never expect anyone to read at their first meeting with us.
  2. Length
Your reading must be no more than 500 words.
This limit is imposed so we can fit as many readings in as possible.
  3. Feedback
    1. Positive feedback is always welcome.
    2. Constructive criticism can only be given if requested.
    3. There is no place for negative feedback. If you have nothing nice to say, keep it to yourself, otherwise you’ll be asked to leave the group with immediate effect. This might seem harsh, but the wrong word can knock a writer’s confidence, which is the opposite of what we want.
  4. Reading
Speak slowly, clearly and as loudly as possible: we don’t want to miss any of your precious words!
